The most important thing is that despite covering and counting miles, how carefully it is maintained or how its previous owner has driven it. Generally speaking, around 10,000 miles can be regarded as the “high miles” for an ATV or Quadbike. Some people say that the high miles for an ATV are not more than 5000 miles, while others think they may lie somewhat between 2000 to 3000 miles. But on surfing the internet, one gets to know that various opinions are there regarding the “high miles” for an ATV.
One more question in my search for the CRFX for me.When planning to buy an ATV and invest a considerable amount in getting something worthy, one would think that what are the high miles that it could go? It might be a challenging and confusing question that can screw you up. It certainly keeps the reciprocating weight down, necessary rpm. When I first saw a CRF piston I was amazed at the lack of skirt. It seems as though the TRX piston has a bit more skirt on the thrust faces. I am sure the third ring certainly helps with the oil control, as does the water cooling. I'm going to run it as long as possible this time just to see how bulletproof this setup really is. Like I mentioned in my post, I don't plan to rebuild or change any major components anytime soon. It is a pretty popular setup around here.
Then like magic *poof* I had a piston in my hands. I just walked into my local shop and told them I wanted to put the TRX piston into my new build. Hopefully I have not put anyone to sleep with my long post. Thank you for your vast source of knowledge on these fine motorcycles. So, my question is, with the bike built and ridden as mentioned above, how many hours do you feel I would get out of the engine before it would need a refreshing? Not much opportunity to go 70mph in my area in the woods, not at 58 years old anyway. Very little high speed running and almost no wide open runs. The bike would be ridden as a trail bike, hills, sand, weaving thru trees, etc. Perhaps a cam change to bring the power band lower? So I would look towards the 3 ring piston, KW valve job from here, and whatever else would increase the engine life. It was rejetted and had the airbox opened. The rebuild would lean towards the long engine life side, as I find the bike I rode had plenty of performance for me.
What I am looking to do is buy a used 450X and rebuild it when necessary with the correct parts. I understand the short life expectancy of a high performance engine and the benefits of the KW stainless steel valves and good oil and proper maintenance. I have read the forum on the 450X from end to end, and most of the 450R forum. Bikes have come so far in 30 years.Īnyhoo, here is my dilemma. The 450X was quite a step up from the Bultaco 250 Matador that I rode so many years ago. I took a friends CRF450X for a ride with my grandson the other day and it reminded me how much I miss woods trails and firelines. My grandson is in the dirt bike phase of his life.
